6, Jun 2010 - 10:33

Iompar Castlebar, a voluntary organisation promoting sustainable transport in Castlebar, is organising a 'Live Better, Travel Smarter' Day in the Mall, Castlebar on Monday 14 June. This follows the success of a similar event held in the Mall last September. An action packed day with activities ranging from a mass cycle around Castlebar, Cycling workshop for parents on 'how to train children to cycle safely'; fun activities for school children; the distribution of reflective Bicycle Number Plates to all participants. Anne Garavan, Castlebar's Smartest Traveller 2010 will officially launch the Travel Smarter Live Better Week (16-22 September) and the range of events and initiatives that Iompar Castlebar have in the pipeline for that week on Monday next.

The highlight of the day will be the Road Safety Authority Interactive Shuttle bus, organised by Noel Gibbons, Road Safety Officer of Mayo County Council. This will give school children the opportunity to experience safety issues in the town in an interactive and fun way.

Thérèse Ruane, chairperson of Iompar Castlebar said:

"This will be a fantastic day. Children from schools throughout the Castlebar area will be taking part in this innovative event. But this day is for everyone and from 12:30 to 2 pm we have a cycle training workshop for adults and a mass cycle around town and we are encouraging as many adults bring your bikes and come along to that."

"Iompar Castlebar has been working hard to promote Castlebar as a more accessible town for pedestrians and cyclists. This work is really paying off. We've seen the roll out of the Bike to Work scheme; Bike Scrappage Scheme accross Mayo. We are working closely with the Council to make Castlebar more accessible for everyone and we now have a commitment from Castlebar Town Manager for more pedestrian crossings; safer walking and cycle routes and the introduction of cycle lanes in the town before the end of this year. This is very positive and welcome"

"You can play your part in promoting Castlebar as a smarter travel town. The benefits of leaving your car at home, of walking and cycling are obvious - less congestion, healtier and more pleasant environment for everyone. Come along on Monday June 14th next, join in the fun and play your part in promoting cycling and walking in Castlebar."
